I love to surf and I love to take surf photos. Often its with an eye towards competition surfing. Then an event comes along reminding me that surfing is about connection: connection to the ocean; connection to your emotions; and connection to your tribe. This event was a Team Quinn Adaptive Surf Event.

Quinn (above left) is an adaptive surfer who comes from an amazing family of supporters. Their organization has a mission to celebrate, encourage, support and share the richness and purpose that people with disabilities contribute to our human experience and our personal communities. (See TeamQuinnsurf.org here). And boy do they do it in spades.

Watermen and waterwomen of all adaptations were on hand this weekend to seek the stoke. Aided by a large group of volunteers both in and out of the water, the day provided an opportunity for everyone to feel the power of the ocean. The faces tell the story better than words!

Hard work, tons of practice, and a healthy dose of courage are all needed to be able to surf at this level. Quinn, for example, is a member of the US Adaptive Surf Team and competes annual around California and, most recently, Hawaii. Her team consists of her father (seen below pushing her into a wave) and about 3-5 other pushers and catchers in the water as well as a full family compliment of sisters and her mother. Its a full team effort and they have taken it to the highest level.

But Team Quinn also gives back to the community more than it takes out of it. Saturday’s surfing was a peek at how inclusive and supportive this group is. There were first timers and seasoned vets; lifeguards and volunteers; adult surfers and little kids; and, of course, this photographer being reminded that the ocean provides one’s soul with a freedom that should always be enjoyed and never be taken for granted!
