When shooting a surf session, my focus is generally on the waves. There is, however, always an interesting interplay going on behind me as surfers arrive, prepare, compare notes, and leave a session. What happens on the sand is as much about So Cal surf culture as what goes on in the waves…

Just getting to the beach in style with all of one’s gear has been transformed by electric bikes. The once laborious trek to Trestles, for example, is made simple by today’s electric board haulers.

Of course, its not exactly comfortable to bike down to the beach wearing a full wetsuit. Instead, beach changes become an art of their own.

And then there is always the exit. Walking over 20 yards of cobblestones without breaking your ankle or dinging your board takes extreme dexterity and a great deal of patience. It does, on the other hand, make for some interesting image opportunities!
