By now you all know that I am drawn to the color blue, especially where water is involved. Now couple blues with reds for an amazing contrast and you have a sense of my recent visit to Croatia and Montenegro. So here are my thoughts on photographing this amazing landscape…

Whenever I go to someplace new, I find the sweet spot for photography is the first 48 hours. Why is this? Well, I find that my brain senses new colors and sights most acutely on first impression. After the second day or so, what was new becomes the norm and it is harder to identify great image potential. So I love to get up and shoot the first morning I’m in a new location.

Coming from San Diego where roads are on a grid and homes are rather equally spread out from one another, I am instantly drawn to the angles of ancient cities like Dubrovnik. There is a simultaneous sense of jumble and symmetry to these towns that is truly mesmerizing.

I also like to shoot early in the morning as the sun is just coming up. Not only do I have the streets all to myself, but the soft light is so pleasing as it reflects off the old stones. This image is from the ancient town of Korcula.

And when one lives on an island, it seems that all properties are water front homes. Imagine waking up to this view just outside your door every morning!

Both Croatia and Montenegro are visual feasts. The Adriatic provides a gorgeous background to every setting and the warm nights are so inviting. If you decide to visit, be sure to bring along the camera!!
